Getting children excited and interested in nature is a big passion of mine.

I’ll be sharing more about the work I’m doing with children and foraging shortly, but in the meantime, here is an outline of the Foraging with Kids course that we run at the Brecon Beacons Foraging.

Children are welcome on all of the courses, but I believe that foraging stimulates the imagination and teaches children to be extra resourceful. So I have devised a course specifically for them (ages 6-12). Knowing which plants are edible and which are not, and the uses to which plants can be put, is extremely empowering and, I hope, will inspire a life-long interest. I ask that at least one full-paying adult is present for every 4 half-price children.

You’ll arrive on site by 9.45am for a 10 am start (parking details will be sent on booking).

We’ll have a drink (a choice of juice, tea, coffee or something foraged) and then we’ll set off, either on foot (or in the 7-seater car belonging to the Centre) to the destination I’ll have selected as the best for that particular day.

At most we will only be driving only a mile. The landscape, I can promise you, will be gorgeous whichever route we take.

The walk will last approximately 2 hours, and we’ll be back at base by 1pm for a delicious lunch, using foraged ingredients, cooked by our chef.

After lunch the kids and parents will take part in one of several different workshops, according to the season.

Subjects for the workshops include bushcraft, preservation, infusion, blending, fermentation, brewing, cooking, lactic fermentation, and also the use of plants in cosmetics that you can make in your kitchen. I’ll also talk about foraging-related topics.

You’ll make something to take home.

At 4pm we’ll break for tea and cake before you make your way back home.
